BAN ON Conocarpus TREE - QATAR (GULF)

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s (MME) Public Gardens Department has decided to ban the import, sale and planting of the Conocarpus tree at all local commercial nurseries in the country. The department pointed out the ban has been imposed due to the harmful and destructive effects of the tree on the adjacent plants, buildings, facilities, fences, walls, and service pipes and lines. In addition, the roots of the tree causes breaks in water pipes. Further, MME affirmed that the sale and distribution of the tree will be only through its nurseries, according to the need and after taking the necessary approvals from the departments concerned in the country. Pak Tribune - Conocarpus continues to be favourite despite hazards

KARACHI: The Sindh forest department continues to excessively plant and sell trees detrimental to the ecosystem in the province and health of citizens. Despite the fact that botanical and environmental experts have labeled conocarpus a harmful species for Karachi’s environment, nurseries in the city are estimated to have over 5,000 saplings. Unfortunately, harmful effects of many plants planted without proper assessment are often perceived after they have been planted in every nook and corner of the city. A few decades ago, eucalyptus trees were planted across Karachi abundantly. Later, it was found that their deep roots were sucking the underground water at a faster pace than native species would do and the roots were also damaging road infrastructure, nearby buildings, and water and sewerage pipelines.
